A New Alien Species...

NeoScales Jun 12, 2005 10:37 PM

...at least alien to me, the Giant Leaftail Gecko. I can honestly say this is the weirdest thing I've seen. Not just the eyes, the movement - whoa!

Thanks for looking!

All I can think of when looking at those pics is "For itchy, watery eyes, try Clear Eyes."

boy Jun 14, 2005 08:54 PM

Randy,

Give that bad boy a good 1/2 hour shower with tepid water. They leave it alone for a few weeks. Don't mess with it too much as fimbriatus are known to fall to pieces quickly if stressed out. After about a month, you can start to treat it like normal and get all the fecal samples done and vet trips. I would suggest trying to feed it some discoid roaches and crickets.

shoot me an email if you want to know how I keep mine at home.

cheers
Jason

Get some water and food into that guy quick. He is obviously dehydrated and skinney because his tail is all curled up and his backbone is really poking out. He definatly needs some TLC. Hold off on the picture taking and handling for a while. But other than that awesome Uroplatus fimbriatus.

…his photos took about 2-3 minutes to complete and were done when he first arrived here, before going into his enclosure. So let’s ease up on the “take a break on the photos for the animal’s sake” angle. We don’t handle him, or otherwise disturb him except for daily misting and placing adult lobster roaches in his container. The animal’s health and welfare is always my priority.

However I do appreciate accurate husbandry advice and the assessments made of this guy. Any further first-hand advice along this line would be most welcomed, as this is our first of this species and we’d like to keep him around.

The 30min tepid shower that Jason mentioned is something we'll be doing today.

....but he's being treated for them now, as well as well dehydration and "bites". He's in rough shape, but I'm optimistic that he'll be able to recover if we can get rid of the mites and get him hydrated. I don’t know whether his condition is indicative of many imports or the fact that he simply received poor or no care since he arrived.

He’s been here about a week now, and has eaten some adult lobster roaches (his stool looks normal). But once he’s past this first stage, we’ll also be treating for internal parasites as a precaution.

Thanks all for your comments and assistance,

Yes, I've seen a lot come in and that's the norm I'm afraid. Thankfully Tokays are no longer required to be carried in Petcos anymore so that should help cut down.
