Jacksons on Oahu

Lancecham Jul 13, 2003 09:26 PM

I am going to Oahu in a few days and I'll be bringing back some Jacksons. I already have the necessary permits. Now my two questions: 1) Specifically, where is the best place to field collect very nice Jacksons? 2) My airline does not allow Jacksons on board or on as cargo. I live in California and what would the best way to get them home. From what I've been told, Hawaii doesn't inspect chameleons being exported. Is that true? Also, are there any restrictions in California?

I got mine from a pet store i cant remember the name but they only cost 10 dollars for almost full grown adults. I got a pair for only 20 dollars. and ive had them for a few months now and they are doing great. to get them home i cut out the bottom of 2 plastic snapple bottles put them inside a sock and put them in my luggage they got plenty of air since the bttom of the bottle was cut out but they couldnt excape because the sock was around them. I got the permits. but i didnt even have to use them. they did put them through an exray but the didnt say a thing. either they didnt care or they didnt see them. but they do put them through exray. they made it through the flight fine and they are doing great. i heard that polly was a good place to find them but i looked for about 2 hours and didnt see one they dont call them chameleons for nothing. and my book says something about the base of the koolau mountains. happy huntin

Hiding them in your luggage may get them onboard the plane, but think of the radiation your chameleon is getting. They may be fine for a few months, but there will certainly be long term effects. some people don't even want to put their camera film though the machine due to fear that it would ruin their film. I personally had experience "smuggling" animals through the x-ray when i was but a little tyke, and you guessed it, my perfectly healthy animal slowly deteriotrated with no signs of apparent ilness. I later learnt that many things( including them lives animals ) shoudlnt be put throught the scanners at the airport! So i wouldn't recommend hiding your jackson in teh suit case. I hope yoru jacksons turn out fine though

I have no idea....but couldn't you carry them on with you in like a small kritter keeper or something? Just carry it with you. It's a harmless lizard...they let you take carr-ons on the plane..And if it's in something clear, they really dont need to xray it...that would just be stupid, lol. I dont want to be stupid or nething...but this is all assuming they allow exporting animals. But I'm sure they do..I mean ppl send they're creatures all over the world by mail. Good Luck
