Going to college

SeaStar427 Jul 13, 2003 09:45 PM

Hey everybody! Okay, so I currently have a young yellow-bellied slider in a thirty gallon tank, and a juvenile normal corn snake in a ten gallon. They live in my room while my Eastern box turtle lives outside in it's own pen. However, I am going to college next year, and I don't know what to do about my pets. Does anybody know if you are allowed to keep reptiles in your dorm room, or if you can only have like one small tank or something. I live in Virginia, so I would be going to a college like VA Tech/Mary Washington/William and Mary, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Caroline

many schools are getting more and more strict about what you can have as a pet in a traditional dorm (for example, a common rule of thumb was that you could keep an animal (fish, small amphibian, reptile) that was confined to ~ten gallon tank or so. In the past few years, that has been changed in many places to exclusively fish. Call ahead, and think about living off campus in an apt. that allows pets/ an on-campus alternative housing unit (co-op, program house) if you're serious about bringing the memagerie with you. Keepign reptiles illegaly (e.g. under your bed, etc.) is certainly done, but as a seasoned resident advisor, I gotta warn you - the consequences can be harsh and finding alternate housing (even if your animals stay at home while you're a freshman) is a much safer, saner, and less stressfull solution.
