egg-mergency

I did something stupid. I know. I need help though.
I put three more tomatoe plants in my garden. As I turned over dirt I found four eggs. Not damaged. But dug up. I am guessing they are box turtles because my spotted turtle lay eggs in more open areas and never go that far from the pond.

Here is what I did. I took the egg and put the whitest part up.I figured that is where the air is and that is why the rest was colored darker. I noticed on bird eggs the top has this.
I took the eggs and put them in a flower pot that has the same soil they where found in at roughtly the same depth. I read aboth putting them in vermiculite but I am not doing that being as though I know nothing about it.

Kinda tough in your situation. You don't really know for sure which way was up - the way the egg was originally laid. In your case, you're guessing the position of the egg when it was laid. However, that said, and what happened, I suggest you get a plastic shoebox & buy a bag of vermiculite & follow what I said in the post just before yours. Find the warmest place in the house that has a steady temp of about 78 - 80 degrees, maybe the top of the fridge. Just got to do what I said - Moisten the vermiculite with water until it clumps when you squeeze but doesn't drip. place the eggs, cover them lightly with the vermiculite & place the top of plastic shoebox back on. It should have a several holes for air. You can buy Vermiculite in any home garden center. Don't know if your eggs will hatch because they were disturbed. If you placed it the right way, you still have a chance. I would not use a flower pot - too hard to control the temperation. In the ground, the temp is more stable. But I suggest you go the plastic shoebox or plastic container method. Good luck. BTW, no need to look for new additions. If they hatch, you'll have your hands full during the winter.
