vegetation diet

goini04 Jun 13, 2005 08:06 PM

Hi all,

I was wondering what the best type of vegetation diet should be given to RES's and Eastern Painted Turtle's. I would like to change up my diet on them and would like to know what has worked well for others in here.

Thanks and Best Wishes,

Chris

I have best results with actual pond vegetation. Good thing about it is it wont go bad if its in there too long. Its sold by the bunch in pet stores and garden stores that have an aquatic section. Sometimes I catch it myself in ponds, but I have wild turtles, and pond caught plants might have small organisms you dont want.

Other than that, my cooter really enjoyed raw carrots. I would slice them so they were about double the size of toothpicks. He can eat thicker ones, but its a lot more work, cuz hes still a little turtle.

I would also add dark leafy greens from the produce section like mustard or romaine I believe (its been a while). His fav was red leaf lettuce, he didnt care much for collard greens. If the greens sit in the tank for more than a day, they usually wilt and need to be removed. The pond plants last till they are consumed, although shredded pond plants will clog the filter faster.

Thats my experience with plants.
