raising commons in a group

justin stricklin Jun 13, 2005 09:04 PM

I have seen people talking about raising common snappers in a group. I have always raised seperately, scared that they might injur one another. I have 3 young ones about 2" carapac lengths and was wondering if they are aggro to each other, besides during feeding. I had them together for about half the day when I got them and they did not bother each other at all and when I threw some minnows in they bit everything in site and even went after each other. If I were to feed in seperate containers, do you think it would do fine, has anyone done it before without problems? I can raise them seperately but I want to raise them in a group for viewing purposes.

I've had 18 hatchlings together in a small kiddie pool since Sept 04. They have showed no aggression towards each other, except a dinner time. And even then, they are agressive only at the food, or if an arm or leg gets in the way. We've had no serious injuries (one minor tail nip) . They just hang out together (see photo) and seemed to be fine. We did try introducing our 3 year old painted to the mix. That lasted less than 30 seconds. The cute little baby snappers immediately started biting at the arms an legs of the painted. They seem to somehow recognize there own kind.

We are down to 8 youngins now (adoptions, releases).

I have a short video of baby snapper dinner time manners. I'm going to try and upload it to a video download site for everyone to take a look.

Good luck!
