A problem we all have sooner or later.

lichanura Jun 13, 2005 10:07 PM

I have some adult Green Tree Pythons and three Womas. I am going on vacation for two weeks and I have no one to take care of them. I am worried that that is too long without care for these wonderful animals. Anyone have any comments or ideas of what I can do? Suggestions? Thanks all.

Where do you live? maybe there is a herper in your area who could help out.

Hi: I live in Alta Loma, Southern California.

I used to live in alta loma. I even went to hermosa huskies elementary school as a small kid, in rancho cucamonga. The simple answer is, dont take a vacation. I was able to once, only because my mom loves pythons and had no problem with them. Otherwise, I would just have stayed home.

Perhaps you could buy a humidifier and put it on a timer, and have someone who isn't scared of the snakes check on them every day or two. But in the end, it's your call. I would recommend posting a new message requesting a snake keeper to respond. Good luck.

i left my 5 snakes for a week once and they were fine. but 2 weeks is a bit long to leave them alone. i just put in a couple of bowls of water for each snake and hoped for the best. i did a trial run where i fed them, filled all their water and just left them alone for a week to see what would happen. all was well. but i don't know about a 2 weeks stretch. perhaps one of those pet sitter places would come by couple times.

I have a 6 foot plus JCP,
3 corns and a tangerine honduran milk.
also fire belly toads, anoles, cats and dogs. :0)

I wouldn't think twice about it, at least with the womas. I don't have any experience with GTP's but I'd suspect that an extra large water dish is fine for all of them.

Hold off feeding for a couple weeks prior to your trip so they don't poop up the cage. All you really need is someone to change the water.

I take at least 2 weeks every year, sometimes a month. The only thing I ever arrange is water changes.

Thanks for your response. That is what I was looking for. Actually, the womas are what I was worried more about because they seem to eat so often. Thanks again.

A well established woma, and just about every other commonly kept snake, can go a month without feeding EASILY. In fact, I usually wait a month or more between feedings with most of my snakes.

Good luck and have a great vacation.

Snakes can go for a very long time without food as long as they have water. 2 weeks is nothing. Maybe you know somebody that can just look at them after a week, but I don't think it is necessary. I was gone for 2 months, and my wife and kids fed my 15 snakes twice. They didn't even lose weight. They were all fine. Derek

I can put my mind at ease then. Thanks to all for the responses.

One of the great things about reptiles as opposed to other animals is that most of them can be left alone for quite some time. My opinion is that you can leave and these animals will be fine. A thermostat may be in order but really if you live in Alta Loma (I live in Chino) and you are not running the AC, those animals should be fine with no other heat source for two weeks. The only real problem is guaranteeing that they don't spill their water on day two. If you can figure out a way to keep drinkable water in the cage, they will be fine without anything else.

This thread caught my eye because I am also wanting to go on vacation for two weeks and also keep hots. There is no one to feed or water even the non vens for me. Is'nt Chino in a rather warm area? I live on the Oregon coast [a rather cool area] and lost a emerald tree boa a couple of years ago due to a heat wave. I left for only two or three days and came back to a dead snake and a number of others that were close to being overheated along with a real nasty bunch of dead feeder rats I keep in an outside shop. My point being make sure you ac is working. Eric

Point well taken, thanks.

Curious...

So did they make it? I can't imagine leaving my GTPs without misting for two weeks. Mine went on vacation *with* me out of state.
