well...that unhatched egg

umop_apisdn Jun 14, 2005 12:21 AM

finally cracked tonight. i touched it and one side caved in. so i went ahead and opened it up. a nearly fully formed embryo was inside. it's hard to pinpoint exactly what the problem was, or when it happened...but it seems like it perished not too long prior to when it should have hatched. it still had a tiny bit of yolk to absorb, maybe it was just one of those "weaklings" that couldnt quite make its way out. even looks like it had the possibility of turning out female, but i think theres no way i can really complain. it's sad for the loss, but i think i have been beyond fortunate this season, and still have 4 more phant eggs to look forward to. if this continues, i think ill be making some changes to my incubation practices.

I just had that happen with collareds, I had 10 eggs incubating, one seemed to cave in about 2 weeks early, I thought it was done, I opened it to find a wee little tyke, not fully grown and he took a breath and died. I felt terrible, but think he was about to go anyway!

BUT........... HERE are the NINE that hatched on SAT and SUN

NINE little cricket crunchers June 11/ 12th (The Round - Up )

the little guy looks good. he might of hatched earlier cuz the temps were warmer or the female just held onto the eggs longer. but that stuff doesnt matter cuz he looks good.
if youre online tonight i.m. me --> sbcaugm

How are you sexing him?

I remember Kelly telling me that she could not tell until about 6 months old.

I would like to be able to know also

they are somewhat easily sexed when fresh off their first shed when the color contrast is the greatest... at that time you can look at both pattern and coloration, as well as some distinct features unique to males and others unique to females... for example; the slight diamond pattern in his background on this one... or the lack of distinct markings behind the head such as in females... often they have a U shaped mark... I am no expert at this, but these methods come from the staff at the Riverbanks zoo and they have hatched 10s (i think even over 100) henks...

in the next two photos you will notice a black u shape on the back of the head... both photos are taken just after hatching... both were sexed then as females...

For Riverbanks..

They produced so many henkeli that they have gotten out of them almost completely. According to a friend there, they hatched their 800th uroplatus gecko this last year. Mind you they do not deal much with satanics or ebanaui.

we need to talk about them again, and let me know the name of that guy i should get in touch with. a friend of mine also knows one of the herp guys there, and he said he recently ran across him while road cruising. ends up he quit and moved on to another job. i hope its not the guy youve told me about.
