egg question

cmsuphoto Jun 14, 2005 02:45 AM

So, I've been breeding a few years now, and this year kinda brought about a special question.

I had a snow male that I bred with an anery female, and I get some really cool looking zig zag anerys out of them. Anywho, there's a story first, then the question.

The snow recently passed away. He was old, so that might have something to do with it, but I think he also got a bit impacted. I record eating, sheds, and defications on a chart for all my snakes, and things weren't adding up as usual. Anyway, he still mated, so I guess these little hatchlings will mean more to me than any other ones, but here's the question.

The female only laid 17 good eggs, and about that many slugs. Usually, she's good for 100% fertilized eggs, so I was wondering if there's something I did wrong, if he was just old, or she's sick too? What causes so many slugs in a usually very fertile woman?

Thanks in advance for help!

AJ

Chances are, you'll never know for sure. It's possible that the female retained sperm from last year, which would explain a lower fertility. Or the male, being ill, was not producing fully viable sperm.

I don't know the answer to your question but I have one for you.... that is a sweet tank, is it 2 tanks or a 2 story tank with access to both parts?

it's actually one cage. the entire thing is on casters, so it's easy to roll around. The base is 2X4's, the rest is plywood. The back has piano hinges, pictured, and the entire thing is lit and heated with lights. The lights plug into a power strip on top, all plugged into a timer, so they all get the same photo period. Vents on the side, glass front. Fun to build, only cost about $150. The measurements are four feet wide, four feet tall, two feet deep. Lots of polyurythane to protect against water spilling. Aspen as substrate.

Good times.
