1 month argentine black and white tegu

emvee Jul 13, 2003 10:16 PM

i just got an argentine black and white tegu from lll reptile at a reptile show.. it looks healthy and is not boney at all.. im guessing its a month or so old because it only has a very very little amount of green on it... anyways i got it a couple of days ago and today i offered it a few mealworms and just a little bit of fruit. It didnt seem very interested in either of them though. I was wondering about how long i should give it before i really start worrying about it not feeding or about how long it should take to get comfortable enough to feed or any other ideas on different kinds of food. Pics can be found on my website http://matt.luethy.net in the albums section.

Try crickets--they move around a lot more than mealworms. And make sure the tegu always has lots of fresh water--very important, as they like to drink. When our B&W first came home, he was hesistant about eating for a few days, but then got into the swing of cricket hunting until we weaned him to chicken and stuff. A word of caution: if you're tegu is small, and the crickets are big, don't leave them in his cage overnight if he doesn't eat them. Big crickets can chew on lizards (often a problem with young bearded dragons, but I'd watch out for young tegus also).

Glad he is eating the crickets! One more thing, though: make sure you dust them with Miner-All or some other calcium/D3 supplement (NOT with Vitamin A, though), at every meal for a young lizard (put the crickets in a bag with the powder and shake them up). Calcium deficiency is a serious disease, and its effects can be permanent and even fatal.
