Need help with home made Snake Racks!!

VolcomHerp Jun 14, 2005 10:30 AM

Anyone who has quality homemade snake racks please send pics, because I really need to start using them instead of glass cages(There really taking up to much house space). My Grampa said if he could see a decent set up he could help me build one instead of paying a heavy price for a freedom breeder or some sort other name brand product. Any advice about building snake racks would be very helpfull!
thanks
jake

I use self constructed melamine racks. They are very simple to build, taking only a few hours to build. I have Home Depot make the cuts. I back it with some insulating material(I forget the name of it). These racks all seem to work fine but they are not lightweight and if you plan on moving alot it might be a pain and the racks may wear quicker. Check out the habitat and cage contruction forum. It is very helpful and will give you alot of ideas.

Here is a pic of one that I built with five slots.

Hello Jake,

I'm not exactly sure what kind of racks you are looking to build, but we have a Small Boa Rack building tutorial available on our website.

This rack uses tubs made by Gracious Living. You should be able to get the tubs from ReptileTubs.com. I do not believe they are listed on Eric's website but if you call or email him, I think he stocks them. We also recently saw them at Home Depot so you might want to check your local HD.

The tubs are 36" x 22" x 5" and are great for growing babies up in. You can also house small adult males comfortably in the rack. It's too small for good sized females though. When our young Boas get to be about 2 1/2 feet long, we try to move them into this rack. We find that once we move them over to the larger tubs, they seem to grow extremely well.

It's a fairly easy rack to build and the most expensive thing about it are the tubs although I believe Home Depot had them in packs of 2 for around $20. So you are looking at roughly $10 per tub. I'm not sure how much they are from ReptileTubs.com though. And if you don't have a heated reptile room to put the rack in, you'll have to wire it up with FlexWatt which is how we have ours set up. I hope this information helps. Good luck!

p.s. Nice looking boas!

dang, I posted but my PC shut down! lol
Anyways...
Here is a simple rack I had made for my corn snakes I used to have, the directions were from Dwight Good's website but he isn't doing the snake thing and took off his site, it's too bad.
Here's a pic of it being made (hey, my b/f was good for something lol) you could do the same for small boas, even run pegboard up the back and attach plexi doors to the front of each shelf instead of using the small tubs like I did.
You can do to the link at the bottom, I don't have much details but it gives the supply list, spent just around $100 total.
oh and my website is WAY out of date so just ignore the rest of it. lol
hope that helps

Home made racks.. great for storing and HEAVY to move.
This first rack is made out of mdf and is particularly heavy!!!!BUT i think its build price was under 100 bucks!

My father made this rack about 2 years ago, its made out of red oak and snake wood access pieces. It truely is a work of art and cost about 400 bucks to made but hey Daddy paid soooo....

These last ones are some 4.5 foot tanks we recently sold but they are sold red oak and beautiful. There was an extra pocket made under each tank for the Kane heat mat which worked out really well...

LOL... thats not a rack thats our moving friend Jeff being all tied up by little Eos...lol
