A word of advice

Jeni Jun 14, 2005 12:08 PM

I haven't posted here in a long time. I use to frequent here years ago...I want to share something from my experience. I hope that it will help someone.

2 months ago, my CWD, Niner was being syringe fed baby food because she had some parasites (she was being treated for) and was not eating. She choked to death.

What I learned that would have made a difference -
1. Only feed a couple of ccs at a time and wait for them to swallow. Do not fill the mouth or put the syringe to far back in the mouth.

2. Locate the nearest after hours vet to you and keep the number on hand. I cannot stress this enough. I drove 90 miles an hour and I still didn't make it in time. The closest after hours vet I found (at the time of emergency) was 50 miles away.

3. Be intuitive. If you think something is wrong or if you see them acting strange, act immediately. You're probably right.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss, although i never had to feed my dragon food through a syringe, i did have to give his medication for his parasites with a syringe. It's a difficult thing to do indeed and you have to be careful as you learned. Knowing an after hour vet you can contact is very important indeed.

Thank you so much for posting this!!! I have had many problems due to being ignorant and accepting bad advice. I am having to feed Charlie chicken baby food with calcium and vitamins added. I am thinking that he is a she, but she is waaay to skinny in my opinion. I wimp out when I think she doesn't want any more, but have been worried that it is not enough. I keep thinking that I should be brave and just give her a bunch. Now I am glad that I have followed my intuition. And, in my personal opinion, she does look better.
