Impacted Crestie

honuman Jun 14, 2005 12:46 PM

Hi -

One of my (way too many) Juvie cresties has an impaction. I happened to notice when feeding last night that this one had what looked like a famine belly and his tail was very think (like he was dehydrated). So I took him out and gently felt his abdomin and sure enough there was a hard knot in his stomach. He is only 3 inches long (SL). I put him in a warm soak and then tubed a small bit of warm water into him and gently massaged the knot again trying to loosen it up. I repeated this procedure again this morning. He is still very energetic and bites at my finger and syringe when he sees it. Is there anything else I can do for him to try and loosen this blockage up until I can get him to vet.
Thanks
Steve

I would just keep soaking him and probably only feed him liquidish foods. Not much else you can do besides take him to the vet. I would also remove the stuff that he impacted himself with. (Dirt, substrate, etc) if you already havent.

its a natural laxitive, and i have heard it has been used succesfully at passing impactions... but if the blockage is larger than the end of the GI tract the vet is prolly the best option.

keep in mind that surgery for an impaction is going to be about 150$ to 200$ plus the fees for the initial vet visit and or x-rays.

go in with a financial plan. if you cant afford surgery, keep in mind that euthenasia might be the best option. if you can afford surgery and are willing to do it, more power to you. also you could look at the x-ray and decide whether or not its worth it to keep trying to pass the impaction. if you do that, crested gecko diet is an excelent liquid food to keep the feedings going. just remember that a 3 inch gecko wont need all that much food.

good luck to you! hope it works out, and i hope u caught it early
