Garters mate as soon as they come out of hibernation. Birth takes place roughly 4-5 months later. In other words, the garter snakes are pregnant right now. Hope this helps.

The gestation period for an eastern garter is 90 to 100 days.
so....if the gestation period was somewhere between 3 and 5 months.......what was the deal with my Gopher???? she was a va garter i caught in october, and she had 1 birth at the end of may.....but i don't think it was alive it seemed unhealthy, it had a pinkish lump and then it kinda tapered off after that when i found it. (possibly 3-5 days after it happened, i was in the hospital doing the same thing, giving birth) I've already posted this question, and everyone seemed to doubt the possiblity that it was a baby snake. (positive of this fact, thank you) Can anybody answer my curiousities?
If your garter was not with a male after you caught her she probably had retained sperm. Garters (and other snakes?) have the ability to retain sperm and become pregnant at a later date. If what you found was a baby I am not sure anyone could tell you for certain why there was only one and it was deformed.
