Just picked this little guy up today, is it common for them to be so DARK??

I'm sure he isn't anything special, but he stood out in a group of 30 or so.. I picked him up from a local petstore, he's captive hatched.. Thanks for looking and opinions would be great!! I have him in pix with a normal female of regular coloring so you can see how much darker he is..

Here's a picture of his belly, nothing out of the ordinary..

For 20bux, I couldn't pass him up.. Thanks again for looking!

(congrats, btw, and good for you for buying captive bred!)

it's probably best to quarantine a new snake, observe it for 1-2 months, just to make sure it's OK. Wouodn't want to infect your other one.

Oh, I just bought her yesterday from the same place, and they were in the same enclosure at the pet store... And I will be quarantining them.. Thanks for the advice though..

Either way, I'll keep him, breed him, grow the offspring, breed back and see what happens...

It is a Melanistic normal Joe. It just means that there is more black pigment showing than is normally the case. IMG (Increased Melanin Gene) balls start off a normal colour and then get progressively darker, usually after each shed.
