Quarantine!

jxd357 Jun 14, 2005 08:17 PM

Hey everyone, this is my first time abck to the forums in years!

Anyway, I have a 6 year old redfoot tortoise and am getting a yearling in tomorrow. Now the yearling looks healthy and everything but how long should I keep in away from the other tortoise before I can deem it "healthy"?

Thanks alot,
Joe

I always quarantine mine for 2-3 months just to make sure. I also usually take them to a vet as well.

3 months. I really would reccoment keeping them apart for 6 months to a year. Ilot of weird ailments can hide with no symptoms for a long time. If nothing else, the size difference between the torts may make the little guy an easy target to pick on! Definately get them BOTH checked out at a vet for general healty, parisites ect. before their first meeting!!!

I agree with Ian, go 6 months strict quarantine (no food sharing!). I also think the size difference would justify separation until the little guy catches up. Be sure to carefully supervise feeding if you should mix them sooner.

Watch their poop for any bad signs. I would wait at least 2 months! Good luck!
