is red dye really harmfully to snakes? how about monitors? I use rodent food for mine but I know people that use the dog food. one even mixes it together with lab block to, I was just wondering maybe there is a dog food that has no red dye in it huh.

I actually use Lab Block with a mixture of dry cat food (with no red dye - called Special Kitty - get it in 20 lbs bags) along with my local Albertsons brand cheap dog food or Good Day "Chunck Dog Food" also very cheap. It works out very well with my rat colonies and they will eat the cat food first, then the dog then the lab block. I get strong large litters even in the summer time when it is really hot. READ the label and make sure there is no red dye in it. I used to use Ole Roy but when they started using Red Dye I quit.

I have my rats in racks the feed goes on top,it has to be big enough not to fall through 1/2in hard ware wire. where do you find that kinda dog food (good day "chunck" and most cat food will fall right through 1/2 wire.

I found it at Albertons here locally (the "Chunck Dog Food" that is of course. The "Special Kitty" cat food I find at Wal-Mart. As far as 1/2" mesh goes, yeah, it will fall through - maybe not the chunk dog food stuff however. Me personally I have used all 1/4" mesh for both rats and mice and the rats can get around it just as easily as they can with the 1/2" mesh IMO.

.............american fare dog food that has no food dye and it comes in larger chunks,won't fall thru 1/2" hardware cloth.

But is red dye really BAD?

thats what I have heard that red dye is harmfull, trying to find out if it is to reptiles
