Bayco Model SL-912T and SL 512T review,,,,,,and brief trip report......

chrish Jun 14, 2005 10:46 PM

Spent the last weekend (Th-Sun nights) out west. Took my new lights (Bayco Model 912 and 512) out for a test drive as well.

If you didn't read RAK's comments about them, the 512 has the same bulb and works like the stubby II but only costs about $23 and is available in O'Reilly's Autoparts Stores over the counter. It works great, gives off as much light as the stubby II and is very easy to use. The rocker type on/off switch is easier to use than the switch on the stubby II.

The SL 912 is a two bulb, 26 watt hand held fluorescent, sort of like a double stubby. What isn't obvious on the website is that there are two rocker switches so you can turn on each bulb independently (for a 13 watt or a 26 watt light). This means you can hunt with one bulb on and switch on the other just when you need a blast of brighter light. I found the extra bulb wasn't worth having on all the time (one bulb was plenty). So the advantage to this light is you always have a "spare" bulb in case one fails.

I own a stubby II and both of these bayco lights. Next time I go out alterna hunting, I will only take the 912. It is the only light I need and it gives more flexibility.

Oh....I took a friend out for his first ever alterna hunt. On the first night (Thursday), he found a pair of alterna in 30 minutes on Pandale road. Some guys are just luckier than others (especially me!).
We headed to the river road to look for subocs and found two one evening and 7 the next. I took a series of comparison pics from the second night. The variation in bogeys from one locality is really interesting. One snake in particular was a real unusual beauty!

Pics to come later.

I actually took some pics of the bogeys in our hotel room before letting all but one of them go. They aren't art, but I will get them downloaded and post them soon, along with the 1.1 alterna.

1.

Lance and I got 6 in one night. A total of 12. I kept a few but not all.

Congrats,

Steven

We had found 6 in one night twice - once in Culberson Co. and once in Otero County NM, always in the first two weeks of June. Seven was a new high for us.

Frankly, we could have found 10 I'm sure. We found 5 in a couple of passes on the RR between Lajitas and the Teepees (about 4-5 miles from Lajitas). On the way back to Wildhorse, we haphazardly checked a couple of the gravelly white cuts between Lajitas and Terlingua and found 2 bogeys on the 4-5 cuts we scanned as we drove by. I'm sure if we slowed down and walked or stayed in the hotspot where we found the others, we could have found 2-3 more with ease. Not a rare snake during the first two weeks of June.

Hey Chris!
Congrats on the great trip! Looking forward to seeing some photos of the alterna and bogeys you guys found!
How did you like the Christmas that Justin found? Pretty nice, huh? Some guys have all the luck!

Happy herpin'...

Yeah, that was a pretty nice one, if you like those western alterna I gave him a suitably hard time.

You have to see the bogeys we found. No blondes, but one of the ones from 4 miles west of Lajitas was really a neat snake with striping that extended well onto the body. I will post the bogey pics and alterna pics in a few days while I have time (my A&P students are taking an exam right now and I'm sure the sound of me typing away at my laptop is getting on their nerves).
