Do they really need heat?

nomadofthehills Jun 14, 2005 11:06 PM

I've had 2 for 7 years, with no heat. I live in NY, and they are both females. They have fat tails, are active, and good eaters. Got them as neonates when I was little, like 10, lol.

Heat is needed to denature (change the structure of) proteins in order to break them down in the digestion process. For example, if you eat a frozen meatball, it holds the same amount of nutrients as a warm cooked meatball, but you won't get as much nutrition from the cold one because it's harder for you to digest. To a point, your body can regulate the temperature in digestion, but reptiles don't have that internal ability. The result is your leopards probably aren't getting optimal nutrition no matter what you feed them and it probably took them a LONG time to hit full grown size.
