Will it survive?

purplegirl Jun 15, 2005 10:23 AM

On the 20th March my corn snake layed 7 eggs. This was unexpected so I read up on it and put them somewhere warm and watched them. They all started to go mouldy and, one by one, i threw them away. Today I looked at the last one and it seemed to be mouldy too. I held it up to a strong light and it looked empty. Stupidly I decided to have a look at what was in it. I now have a very small, barely alive corn snake and I feel awful. Is there any chance at all it'll survive? It has a faint heart beat but no movement other than it's tail. What can I do to help it?

Unfortunately, I highly doubt that it will survive. Not a snake expert here, but egg-born species depend soley on their eggs for protection and sustinance. In my opinion the maturity of the snake (did you say how long the eggs had been laying there?) will play the biggest factor in its survival at this point, but I'm sorry to say that you probably shouldn't get your hopes up...

The eggs could have been in the tank for about a week before I found them which means this one would be between 80-90 days old. I've got her(?) in a small tub on a heat mat to keep her warm. She's still got a heart beat but no other movement. I'm really upset that I didn't just leave it for another couple of weeks. I honestly thought there wasn't anything in the egg. Thank you for replying so quickly.
