Can you help me identify this snake.

tbailey Jun 15, 2005 02:17 PM

We found this snake here where I work.
We need to know if it is poisonous. I personally feel its a cornsnake but there are those here that think it is a copperhead.
If you can identify it please give me some sort of creditials as to your expertise as this answer will be given to higher ups in my company. You don't have to be a herpatologist or anything just someone who can instill confidence in your ability to identify it.

Sorry here is the photo

Yes it's a cornsnake here is a link to picture of a baby copperhead, I would suggest printing it out and tormenting your coworkers for their ignorance. You don't have to be an expert to see the difference, just have a couple of brain cells functioning.

Looks more like an Eastern Milk to me. Either way, 100% NON-venomous. Where was it found?

Well lets put it this way even after the snake was removed from the lobby in a bucket she still had me go to the lobby to retrieve her ink pen.

The photo makes the snake look large. It is only about 6 or 7 inches long. We are in East Tennessee if that helps too.

Definitely an eastern Milk. I find those all the time at work.
Non-venomous.

Hotshot Jun 15, 2005 04:48 PM

non venomous snake. Do a search on the internet and you will find tons of info on this little guy. Not a good first snake, picky feeders and pretty shy and squirmy. Best to just let it go somewhere it will be safe.

Our head of maintenance took the snake home and released it into the woods. I was tempted to keep it but I have 2 kingsnakes already and not room for more.

That was definitely a juvenile eastern milk snake (Lamproppeltis t. triangulum) you found an absolutely harmless specimen and great find for many within the hobby.
Here is an excellent resource for identifying the herpetofauna of Tennessee:
