Bufo marinus!!!

drummagirl Jun 15, 2005 04:40 PM

Just recieved by Bufo marinus today, w00t! S/he is so cute!
I know they'll eat anything they can get in their mouth, but my question is what ratio of food do you feed them? By that I mean, how much bugs (crickets) to how much meat (mice). I know you need to vary the diet with mealworms, waxworm, roaches...right? I remember seeing articles about how a diet high in mice can be extremely unhealthy for pacman frogs...I didn't know if the same applies here? And lastly, how much food do you feed in one setting? Just let them eat until they quit? I'm so looking forward to growing this guy up! Thanks for any insight!

Can I ask where you got your toad? I am thinking on adopting a marine toad.

Thanks

I don't have a Bufo marinus, but I have 2 American Toads. And basically all toads act the same so I should be able to help ya.

It depends on how big the toad is, for how much they will eat. My 2 are like 3 inches long or so. SO I feed them 5-6 adult crix daily. And every other feeding I feed them 3-4 superworms.

I wouldn't let the toad eat as much as it wants. It'll end up just eating it self to death or end up eating like 12 crix daily when it's bigger and you'll end up having no way of buyin and keeping 7 dozen crix a week for 1 toad.

Well, if it's a marine toad, it will probably be able to eat feeder fish, pinkies or large earthworms before it gets big enough to want 12 crickets per day.

I have 2 adult male canes and I feed couple dozen crickets twice weekly. I only give mice once or twice monthly... maybe they seem hungry. But Toads always seem hungry. They never stop eating.

If you have baby cane you would need more food then adult toads.. AND if you really do have a female, they grow up to 9 INCHES...WHICH IS A LOT OF TOAD TO FEED... And they live 40 years or more.. this species is meant to survive!!!!

I guess just feed as large of a variety as you can. Variety is the spice of life, right???

Thanks!!

I figured a lot of mice couldn't be too healthy..someone needs to breed a super cricket I think I'll check and see what variety of insects I can get.

Unfortunately I have no idea how old this toad is...its as big as my hand (with fingers splayed)...hoping its not full grown I know with tree frogs you can look for nuptial pads, does that work for these guys to? Don't know if it will matter, I've never been able to see those pads anyways!

thanks again!
