Feeding Questions

lille425 Jun 15, 2005 04:57 PM

I have a 5' albino burmese. When i got her she was feeding on mice and now i am trying to switch to Rats. It has been 2 months since she has eaten. It doesn't appear that she is losing any weight and she is still shedding fine. Does anyone have any helpful hints to get her to eat and how long should i let her go without eatting anything.

I had the same problem once...it was a pita...you can try waiting it out, Or try offering a rat right after a mouse
I really dont know why people start burms on mice...they will easily take rat pinks

There are a lot of things you can do, try scenting a rat with a mouse, try a rat right after a mouse, wait it out. I will see if I can find you a site or thread that talks about all the different ways.

I have also wondered for the longest time why anyone would ever feed mice to a burm, a hatchling can take rat pinks and even rat pups right out of the egg.

I have switched my burms from mice to hamsters (that's what you get when mom does the ordering) to rats to rabbits and I had the same problem with my albino when we went to rats. What I did that nearly always worked was to skin a baby rabbit (a little difficult if you don't raise them yourself) and put the skin over the rats head and offer it to the snake. Usually after he ate one he'd eat more right afterwards. My snake would also go crazy over poultry when he didn't even sniff rodents. So if you're really worried you could try that.

I wouldn't worry about how long he'll go without eating. My same snake just ate this week for the first time in TEN MONTHS! And there's no noticeable weight loss.

Good luck

Terry
