Night Snake or Glossy Snake...

Sasheena Jun 15, 2005 08:41 PM

Hey, neighbor kid comes over to show off the little snake he caught somewhere here in the west-of-phoenix area. I hadn't seen one like it... it reminded me slightly of a ground snake because it had a dark head.... but otherwise it was different. I looked at some pictures of glossy snakes and thought I had it pegged, but then I looked at some pictures of night snakes... thought it looked like a cross between teh two! I'll post a picture in a few, but in the meantime I thought I would ask if anyone can tell me how YOU might tell the difference between the two.

A few notes about the snake... appeared to be a very plump female (judging by tail size/shape/length) and it was VERY docile. Wrapped around my fingers and just hung out for more than ten minutes. Was probably between 12 and 18 inches in length, though I didn't measure it. Pictures of Glossy snakes appeared to have the same head/neck pattern, but Glossy's appeared to have a pattern somewhat reminiscent of corn snakes, while night snakes appeared to have a more "diamond - like" pattern.... this one had saddles AND diamonds?

Anyway... I'll go process those photos and post them. Kid said he had a couple of hatchling sized fence lizards he'd caught .... gave em to the snake and it chowed down on them immediately.

Check the pupils, if their vertical, like a cat's, you've got a night snake. I've got a couple of new baby glossies who both have a night snake like neck pattern, but the shape and pattern of you guy tells me that it's a night snake.
