Is it possable for a RES to hibernate during the summer if he is to shy to come out and bask in the sun?

Is it possable for a RES to hibernate during the summer if he is to shy to come out and bask in the sun?
I dont think he will. I believe you need a certain setup for a turtle to hibernate. I think you need close to 2 feet of water with a few inches of mud at the bottom for the turtle to borrow into. Not usually a common thing to do with a pet turtle as they would do it in the wild when it gets cold outside. I dont know if its a good idea to mess with a turtle like that(hibernate during the summer), but I could be wrong.

I have 2 1/2 feet of water in my pond. But no mud at least not that deep. Its just I havnt seen my RES. I put him in the pond about 2 weeks ago. I see air bubbles every now and then so I think he is still around. He has stuff to eat plants, snails, small fish, alge ect..
Well, they stay underwater a lot. Is there a place for the turtle to bask? Is it possible for him to escape? I am sure he is there just under the water. Keep an eye on the pond....i am sure you could catch him coming up for air at some point.
