Need Some Help?????

BallPython13 Jun 15, 2005 10:39 PM

I have 5 redeared sliders and 3 wc wood turtles, can I keep the wood turtles with the redeared silders in a 48 inches long x 13 inches wide, most of the tank is water and the rock out of the water is 19 inches long and 13 inches wide. 3 redeared sliders are about 5 inches long, the smallest one is 4 inches long and the biggest redeared slider is 6 inches long, and the smallest woold turtle is 4 inches long and the other 2 are 8 inches long. would it be ok to put all the wood and redeared sliders together or can I just put the baby wood turtle with the redeared sliders. Thanks Scott Glover

That sounds like a rather small tank for that many turtles. I wouldn't keep the RES and wood turtles together. It's rarely good to mix species and you could have disasterous results. The sliders definately need much more room then what they currently have (while the 48" is good the 13" is not)

Definitely not enough space and they really have different requirements so keeping them together is not a good option.
If these wild caught wood turtles where caught by you or locally and not kept in captivity too long or exposed to other turtles you might want to consider releasing them where they were found. These guys are having a rough time keeping their numbers up in the wild and they need as many potential breeders out there as possible. If you don't know the original location of these turtles and are not sure if they have been exposed to other turtles while in captivity then I would not attempt to release them anywhere.

Good luck with all of your turtles.

Well the tank you have is about 1/6 the minimum space you would need I'd say.

Young Wood turtles and red ears are poor choice to mix together.
Also you should know it is not legal to collect wood turtles from the wild anywhere except PA except under certain conditions.
