What exactly is "decomposed granite"?

samoID Jun 16, 2005 03:43 AM

i've read that this is the best substrate for Uros (i hope i didn't misread that)...so i'm wondering what does it look like because i can't literally translate it in Slovenian language...
and i need as much info as i can get so i'll be able to finde it here in Slovenia...
if not possible, at least tell me what is second best substrate fo Uros...
i've been using playsand but it's not diggable...
thanx in advance!
Samo

Substrate is a hot topic. I have been using playsand (actually, just sand) from home depot for a couple of years now with good results. As for the decomposed granite, I haven't heard of anyone using it. I do know that it's consistancy can change based on it's moisture level, and can actually harden. What few pictures I've seen online, I personally would not use it. Also, it looks like some are dyed as it is commonly used for home "construction" (like for patios and such) so I'd be worried about that.

That's what I can see with a quick Google search. I'd stick with the playsand, IMHO

There was an article about 1994 written by Lynne Villars of the Indy Zoo on eagyptius. Decomposed granite was the substate they used in their desert dome. It turned out this stuff was not the best choice. It is very coarse and sharp. It would tear up the lizards, especially the bottom of the feet and toes when the lizards would burrow in it. It is pretty rough stuff.

Actually they just recommended it as a good substrate in their latest issue for ackie monitors.

I don't get reptiles magazine anymore but this was out of Reptile And Amphibian magazine around 1994. In the article they didn't say it was bad or good. They just stated that it was the substrate they chose for the dome there. A few years later I was talking with one of the keepers there whose name I cannot recall and he told me the stuff was terrible. It was tearing up the smaller burrowing desert lizards such as dipsosaurus and uromastyx. Maybe there is different grades or textures of it??? The stuff they had was like a coarse gravel and he did not recommend its use. That's all I remember. Are they still using it at the Indy Zoo? I know they had it trucked in from AZ. I will try to find out more and post later. Tom
