Upgrading enclosure, any suggestions?

chibicricket Jun 16, 2005 10:49 AM

My leo has somewhat outgrown her little 10 gallon tank, and a friend of mine is giving me a 30 gallon. Do leos like a lot of stuff in their enclosure, or is it best to keep it basic? I've always wondered about this. Right now, her enclosure is pretty basic, with a hide, humid hide, calci-dish, water and food dish, and a fake plant for decoration. That's all I really could fit without it being cluttered. I've seen a few people's set-ups that have a lot of fake plants and tons of places for the leo to hide in, and they look really nice. If heating isn't an issue, what do you think the leos like better, a more realistic looking environment with lots of places to hide, or a basic environment that isn't as appealing?

Multiple hides are good for variety but I discovered the hard way that leos HATE too much clutter. Mine like floor space to sprawl out on and its easier to hunt with minimal clutter(if you're feeding in the cage).

Here's a photo of what NOT to do! This habitat no longer looks like this:

I like the slate tiling look. You can also take styrafoam, cut it to look like rocks/slate, glue it together, and paint it with a paint-on fake rock or gravel. (Make sure its leo-safe paint though)

The fleck stone paint doesn't adhere very well, not to mention it is over priced. Try grout.
