Foot in Mouth: Feeding pic:

Oxyrhopus Jun 16, 2005 12:33 PM

Hagen's Tree Viper. Took another pic today of her eating. Sometimes she eats the frogs backwards as she did with this frog. This is a captive born specimen from last years clutch. This species lays eggs vice having live born like the majority of asian tree vipers. Their venom is not strong on the frogs and she struggles with them, and she eats the majority of her meal while its still alive.

Sorry about the quality as the pic was through the glass.

Notice the white spots. They were all born with red spots and in the first photo notice how the spots look reddish. Neat stuff. The white spots are what helps identify hagens from other asian tree vipers. They also display different behaviors from whitelips and popes.

It's probably just me projecting, but doesn't that frog have the same look I used to see on lizards after our parrot snake grabbed them...the look that says "this is probably NOT good."

...such a good tune...

Dan, thats an interesting if horiffic shot. I once fd. a nightsnake by following the sounds of a screaming toad that was dragging it for a few meters & then it was paralyzed & swallowed.
Did your frog scream?
Its curious how w/ anuran prey...most snakes dont care if they go down head 1st or not....Im not sure they can tell what is the head on a frog!

John: Yea, the frogs cry out sometimes and the wife looks at me with a mean face. I say it's just nature. A few times in the field I have heard similar cries from frogs but never tracked them down. A friend heard a cry and was successful to discover a yellow-rat consuming a Cuban tree frog. Thier cry is similiar to a rabbits cry. Good thing snakes cannot hear or else they would let go the cry is so heart wrenching.
