baby anaconda not eating

kimotat2 Jun 16, 2005 12:49 PM

I have a baby anaconda around 2 feet. i bought him off of the classifieds from a very well known breeder. he is a cbb, and was supposed to be eating live small- med rats. there is no way he could eat anything that size. i am not new to boids , i have several . however this is my first conda. i've had him for 3 weeks now i have tried feedind him live, p/k, frozen, all adult mice. i have fed him in water ,out of water,i always let him stay in his feeding container for about an hour before i try feeding him. i am getting very worried. does anyone have any advise?

The first thing I would try is feeding it in the primary cage. Moving it to a feeding container can stress some young boids (but not all) and could keep some of them from feeding. This can be especially true with young greens.

Young greens are very shy as Kelly stated. He has dealt with many more than I have but I would also like to express how important it is to feed in the primary cage and often times you need to leave the room and keep it dark. I would also say to go with the rats. Try small rats if it has been a while since the snake has eaten. I have noticed a tendancy to want slightly smaller meals if its been a while between feedings. Mice may be too small and if the snake has already eaten rats it would be more likely to continue on a prey it has eaten before. Good luck.

I've had better luck gettin condas eating rats then mice. Your baby green can eat a small/med rat without a problem. What some pet shops call a medium some call a small, however, so just get it a small rat and, like Kelly said, leave it in its cage. I don't use feeding boxes and never have. In my opinion there is no benefit to them and actually creates a dangerous situation when the snake gets larger.

Good luck,
Oldfriend
