Is my BD trying to brumate in the summer??

dannygirl8 Jun 16, 2005 01:09 PM

We have a BD that is about 8 mos old. About a month or so ago he suddenly stopped eating much at all, won't sun himself under heat lamp and all he wants to do is sleep. He doesn't poop unless I take him out and put him in a warm bath. We took him to the vet right away when this started happening and everything checked out great. Vet said he was in great health. It has been suggested that he might be trying to brumate. I have taken him out twice a day for a week or so and soaked him, but that hasn't pulled him out of it. When we feed him crickets, he'll grab a few if I wake him up, but really doesn't have any real interest in them. All the temps are the same and we replaced the UVB Bulb because it was about 6 mos old. Any ideas on what is going on or how we can wake him up. We live in the New Orleans area and it is hot around here. We keep the A/C unit set to about 74 degress, so I know it's not too cold in here. Thanks for any ideas. Diane

i have a male doing the same thing. this is my first time and he's about the same age as yours. he rarely eats or poops or basks and just lays around all day. he has no interest in crickets but does eat his greens some.he's still gaining weight just slowly. he's been this way for about 2 months.

You know this is strange because my male is doing the exact same thing. He'll eat maybe one or two crickets a day a little bit of his veggies then he just lays around until I take him out for a walk around the house. My female on the other hand still eats like a pig and moves around so I don't know if maybe he's just slowed down now that he's older or what. I think my female is still eating like crazy because she's got another clutch on the way but if its just our males acting like this then maybe its due to their age since I've read that as they get older they start to be more lazy and eat a lot less.

beardies that young usually do not brumate, but i suppose it could happen. As long as a fecal checks out ok and the vet says its allright then i guess its ok, just keep a good close eye on him.

Forgot to add...

what are the temps in your enclosure?

if the temps are good you could try adjusting his lights so he has longer days and shorter nights, maybe it will bring him back to the realization that its summer! I would worry about beardies brumating this young as they need to be eating up a storm the first year to get all their growing in...
