Cricket feeding question

riskybiz Jun 16, 2005 02:39 PM

Hi all! I have been lurking and reading for a month or so now, trying to learn all I can without repeating questions that were already out there. My 10 y/o son got his baby dragon, Spyro, the first of May. The dragon is eating well and has made a smooth adjustment. He/She is such fun to watch and really doesn't seem to mind being handled.

The problem we are having is with the crickets. We have two containers that we keep the crickets in. One is a large Lee Cricket Keeper - this is the one I try to keep stocked for my son to use to feed. The other is a large, deep, plastic container that we cut a hole in the top and glued in screen wire - this is the holder tank - I buy our crickets locally 1,000 small ones at a time.

What is the best way to transfer the crickets from the holding tank to the Lee cricket keeper? We have tried several different methods, but alway seem to loose some. Because our dragon is small, the crickets are small - so, if we are able to catch the ones that get loose (and I don't want to even think about the ones we have missed that are growing and going to start chirping soon) - they usually end being killed in the process. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, welcome! I assume you keep egg carton in the holding tank for the crickets? Try tearing smaller bits of the carton off and leaving them in the bin. Then you can shake the crickets off into a tall, plastic cup, one they can't escape from. Of course, you could just try scooping them up with the cup...but if they're really small, you may end up squishing some of them. Hope that helps.

Thanks! I will give that a try. We do have egg cartons in the holding tank, but they are full size. I will cut them down and see if that makes the transfer work smoother.
