Nice pics...now i have to go find out what they are...LOL
I'm not real knowledgable on the scientific names..but i'm learning them.

goini04 Jun 16, 2005 04:59 PM

Dont feel too bad, im in the same book. I can usually figure out what most stuff is through common names, but scientific names are leaving me in the dust.

Chance Jun 16, 2005 09:15 PM

Here is a mostly complete set of the more often used common names for the species pictured. Unfortunately, the first one I can't answer with certainty.

Species number (not picture number):
1 - Some sort of European Adder, sorry I don't know the common
2 - Puff Adder
3 - Jumping Viper
4 - Eastern Diamondback
5 - One of the many Neotropical Rattlesnake species...sorry, can't be any more specific here
6 - Sidewinder (US)
7 - Brown Snake species
8 - Death Adder
9 - East African Green Mamba
10 - Jameson's Mamba
11 - Rinkhal's Spitting Cobra
12 - Chinese Cobra
13 - Egyptian Cobra (black variant)
14 - Monocled Cobra (albino specimen)
15 - Russian Cobra
16 - Black and White Spitting Cobra
17 - icky spider..lol

Since this isn't exactly completely accurate, maybe someone else will chime in to fill in the vague ones.

Im sorry for using the scientific names but here in the Netherlands we prefer to use them instead of the common names.

Thanks Chance for your help!

Here are the missing ones.

1. Southern Lataste's Viper
2. Mexican West Coast Rattlesnake
7. Dwarf Mulga Snake ( or King Brown?)

Thanks for the assistance Rob! I too generally prefer to use the Latin, especially on forums like these where people from outside the US visit. It seems like we tend to rely on common names a bit more than many other places...but that's not terribly surprising. Anyway, I forgot to include this in the first posting, but excellent pictures! They make me miss my Naja badly!
