The pet stores were lying. Those turtles are called red-eared sliders and grow to 10 inches. The smallest turtles in the world still get to 4 inches across.

There are laws preventing the sale of turtles under 4 inches .. and in many places there are other laws preventing turtles from being taken

I believe that mud turtles are smallish in size as turtles go .. but i could be wrong .. i dont know my species well

The smallest turtles available are bog and spotted turtles. Common musk and mud turtles also stay quite tiny. All these will probably get 4 to 5 inches.

Smallest turtle in the world is a bog turtle and is extremely protected federally and internationally. They'll cut off you head if found, plus, the paperwork will cost your right hand. Was it anywhere near $1000?

I think the previous poster is right. Its a red-eared slider. Produced in the Millions on us farms.
