Talk about a difference; the green toad spawn was hatched in a week and swimming in less than two. Usually I'm watching the common toad,Bufo bufo, spawn for weeks before ther's any sign of the eggs even changing shape. Of course, they spawn in Spring, about mid to late March when the water is unbearably cold to the hand. The Bufo viridis spawned in June and we've had some really hot days. I separated the spawn into two tanks, one in the spawning tank full of mature water and leaves and sticks and detritus and the other into fresh pond water with a clump of pond weed. Both were going well until today when I noticed a few of the ones in the original tank had perished. I suspect lack of oxygen and lack of ability to get away from the old spawn and other rubbish which was infecting them. Anyway I've tipped both sets of tadpoles into my two garden ponds so here's hoping . Big Rana temporaria tadpoles in the big pond but I expect them to start leaving the water soon and leave the pond to the green tadpoles.
