Problem with Beardies Cloaca

Helen Jul 14, 2003 07:18 AM

Hi there,
I have a young Beardie around 3 months old, I am pretty sure its a female.
Everytime she goes to the loo her insides hang out of her body. When this first started happening a few days ago she was able to get her insides back in, now they are hanging out most of the time.
There doesnt look like theres an infection.
Please advise on this as I have never encountered it before and I have never read about it either.

Thanks in advance.

You got to take her to the vet as soon as possible. She has a prolapse. In the mean time give her a bath in suger water. Pour regular suger right in the bath water. This is most of the time caused by a bacterial infection. If she is housed on anything that can rub and irratate this area keep her off of it. Put her on paper towels. Soak her for a while it will moisten the area and help relieve some swelling. Please call a vet as soon as possible. Good luck.

This is called "prolapse". This is a very serious problem and needs to be seen by a vet NOW.
Good Luck

So far I have given her the sugar bath this worked straight away in putting it back in.
I have also stripped her viv down and given it a right good clean out to stop infection.
I am on the case now trying to find a reptile vet in the area.

Cheers for all your help.

I'm really happy to hear that the suger bath helped the retraction of the prolapse. A vet is needed to treat the underlying problem something internally whether it be a bacterial infection or a parasitic infection is causing the prolapse of the colon. Most likely it can be treated cheaply with baytril if it's just a bacterial infection. Good Luck. Keep us posted to what happens, and how it is treated by the vet. I'm really curious of what caused this, and how it is treated by the doctor. Thanks for any info you can give after the vet appointment.

will reduce the swelling and may pace it back on its own, but something is causing it. You can use the sugar water soak several times a day to reduce the sweeling.

If you can not get her into a vet right away, cover the area of the vent/prolapse with Vaseline or K-Y jelly and cover with a loose guaze, wrapping around the hips to secure it like a diaper.

The vet may have to put little x stitches in the vent area to secure the prolaspe while they treat what is causing it. looks kinda like this when done -x---x-

Your little one has a prolapse. Keep it off sand or any abrasives. Best to keep it on moist paper towel so it doesn't dry out. A vet will be able to maneuver it back in. Try your best not to let it dry out.
It's a VERY SERIOUS situation. Don't delay in seeking help. Call your vet now..

The poor little girl. I am so glad you are taking steps to locate a reptile vet. I would get her into the vet today.

Dehydration, constipation, dystocia (egg binding), and parasites can cause a prolapse. If the tissue that is hanging out is not put back in before it is dried out or becomes infected, the tissue will die and will have to be amputated. That is why it is so important to get her checked out right away. Something is causing your beardie's prolapse, and it will continue to occur until the underlying condition is treated.

You may find this article I found about prolapses to be very useful ... http://www.anapsid.org/prolapse.html

Good luck and please keep us all posted!
