As smooth as the shell is, I would guess it's at least 40 years old. I've seen an eastern that was known to be over 60 years and its shell was polished smooth.

Beautiful turtle. I found one just like that outside our fence on Sunday while cleaning up the overgrowth (narrowly mixed him/her with the lawnmower). He was about 7 inches and I was so tempted to keep him but there is creek less than 100 feet from where I found him. By the by, Maryland is where I found him.
