A friend sent me these pics of an Adult Male Indigo that was crawling through his yard... (he lives near citrus groves) in St. Lucie County FL. A beautiful animal to say the least. Thought you guys might enjoy the pics.
Take care,
Justin

FREAKING cool animal!
thanks for sharing!
What a fantastic animal!
I hope there are a few remaining in the wild by the time my daughter grows up. i'd sure like her to see one of these beauties slide past her feet.
thanks for sharing,
matt
That's what I said!
Posting this pic and others like it absolutely makes my day.... I love these critters!
Take care guys - I'll talk to you soon Dean...

I suspect to get that 2nd pic somebody had to hold the snake up....... even though that constitues 'Harassment' by the State of Florida, lets see a show of hands of anyone in here that would NOT be able to resist holding one of those if given the chance.
I for 1 would 'harass' one for at least 30 seconds JUST for a photo opt
Great pics thanx for sharing.
Dean
it would be tough to resist

How do you know it's a male?
Sorry I posted it to be a male - actually the person who sent me the pics examined the animal for a few moments before letting it go on it's way... he determined it to be FEMALE - I trust his word as he has been keeping FL snakes longer than I've been alive - even before Indigos were protected in FL.
Take care and sorry again for the wrong info...
Justin

ha...it must have stopped to ask for directions

We've discussed this topic here before, but for those of you unfamiliar, you can sex an adult e. indigo by simply closely examining the dorsal scales along the spine.
Males have a subtle keel that runs only about 1/5 of the scale length(right where the scale meets the body) Females lack this.
It seems to be foolproof on sexually mature couperi...but doesn't really work on the other Drymarchon.
You need to have good lighting and very good eyes...but...once you notice it, it'll be unmistakeable.
Awesome indigo and great photos. Nice to know there are still some out in the "wild" - what's left of it here in Florida. I have yet to see an indigo outside of captivity. By the way, how big was that animal?
