Fruit fly light

Does anyone know if fruit flies need light? I would like to keep the cultures in a closed cupboard, but mine seem to do better when they get natural light. How about using a fluorescent type light in the cupboard?

Be careful not to let them get too hot. they prefer the 60-70's
