A Little Advice?

nogoodteen Jun 17, 2005 09:13 PM

I posted some of my snakes on another website for trade for leaf-tails and a woman offered me the following. At least if I rememeber right this is what she offered. A pair of phantasticus, 2 pairs of fimbriatus I think it was, 2 henkeli she wasnt sure of sex, and I wanna say a pair of sikorae. Shes going to send me pics monday because shes got a show this weekend and I'll know for sure what the geckos are. I'm going to trade 2 big female Ball Pythons ones 2500grams and the others 1700grams. Is this a good trade? The geckos have been in the states sence January and have been treated for parasites and all that. I'm not to sure what these guys go for whats why I'm posting this. Let me know if ya could please, you've all helped me so far and I thank you all for that.
Thanks again,
Blake

are your balls morphs or regulars?

if they are morphs, yeah could be a good deal but then again I don't know what the price is on them. I would say that is a lot of animals to start with. I personally would only take on a pair of any of those animals just because this is your first uroplatus.

I also wouldn't sell yourself short either on your animals. Price them out and make sure you are not losing money on the deal. I lose money on a lot of my deals, because I do favors for people I know, unless you are good friends with some one and don't mind selling yourself short, don't sell yourself short. True friends will always pay you back in some fashion.

It sounds like a good trade but that is way too many Uroplatus to take on for a first keeper. Start with a pair or one gecko before you take on 10 geckos. Definatly not a good idea.

I have no idea what ball pythons sell for so I may not be a good deal. They seem to be faily common though and most pet shops have them for around $50.

I second ben on this. I could buy them for a little over 150 but no where near 500-1000. Sorry but I don't believe you either.

I respect what your saying but I have proof of the prices. And I will share with you. In the Ball classifieds there is a ad http://market.kingsnake.com/detail.php?cat=32&de=320077 they are selling a 1500 gram girl from $500. Another is this http://market.kingsnake.com/detail.php?cat=32&de=317032 they are selling 04 yearlings 300 grams to a little over 400 grams for $450 and are just yearlings they wont be able to breed till the 06-07 season if your lucky. Normal girls go for so much when they are bigger because you can breed them right away. Yes you might spend the $500 t a grand but if say you have a pastel, spider, cinimon, mojaves or any dominat morph you'll make that back in one season and then some so its not that hard to think of them going for that much. If those yearlings are going for so much its deffently possible that a 2500 gram giant goes for more. So I ask is it really that hard to see them going for that much. Some people pay what from a grand to 2 grand for say a pastel depends on line and breeder, pay another 5 grand on big girls ready to breed NOW, one season if your lucky out of 5 girls say 2 out of each clutch are pastels so say 10 pastels the 1st year, sell males for 1000 to 1500 depending on color and females for 2000 to 3000 or so depending on color again. say 7 boys 4 females (makeing the ratio up as I go lol) thats what 15,000 going with the lowest prices. I'd pay it to make that much back in the 1st year. But I do understand not wanting to spend that much on just a planejane normal girl. . . and I do agree its a bit much but gotta pay what they want, if the markets high they'll sell high. Just like certant geckos, the Naultinus grayii are really not cheap. Sorry for this being so long.
Blake

P.S. I'd love to own one of the Naultinus grayii thow lol.

yeah the market for them things really went up this year, so did it with leopard geckos too. its cuz when people come out with a new phase, they hold onto everything they produce and eat up all the females they can get, it makes sense if youre in it for the money. im not saying that all snake breeders are in it for the money, but if you want to make money from your reptiles then snakes are the way to go.

jadrig Jun 20, 2005 11:06 PM

my female apricot pueblan milk is gonna drop her eggs any day now. if i do get babies i probably wont sell them. i dont really like to sell any of my animals. if i dont hold onto them ill probably trade them for sumthin. i ve aquired just about all of my animals in a trade. you usually get a better deal with reptiles then at a car dealership . if someone wants two female balls that bad then take advantage of the deal. thats a lot of leaftails to take on all at once, but if theyre in pretty decent condition then it wont be that hard. all of those geckos would be a lot of maintenance at first. but if you think that youre up for it, this interactive forum is the best source of knowledge on leaftails.

nogoodteen Jun 20, 2005 11:40 PM

Saddly I dont beleave I could take care of 8 leaftails at once lol. Not for my first time owning them. In a few months maybe. I'm probably going to only get a pair like everyones sujested and I agree that one should start small. Hopefully that lady will still be up for the trade in a few months when I feel I'm more ready to own and breed these gems of geckos. I will probably start out with a pair of spearpoints or mossys they seem to be the best for starters from what I've read. I'd rather trade than sell too . . ya always seem to get a better deal lol.

Well, that sounds like a good trade to me because I like uroplatus much more then ball pythons. But those two females sound like they are good to go for breeding and if you plan on breeding BP's I would keep em. Females up here in Canada are being sold for 200-300 dollars no for a CB female right out of the egg. Since some morphs of BP are co-dominant lots of people buy a male of these morphs and a whack load of females and just breed the male to as many females as possible and make their money back 10 times that first year. But if you have no interest in them, the uroplatus sound like a good exchange, look around tho, see what breeding female BP's are selling for like mentioned above and then price em out and see how much you can get for them. I think the money you would get for those females and the money you would spend on those geckos from different sources would be almost equal. If this is the case I would try to get cash and use it to purchase the uroplatus as you get comforitable with them. That is a load of animals to start with. I personally had one male lineatus for 3 months before I got more, but then did I ever get more, I got a pair of sikorae, a trio of phants and a female lineatus. And they are all doing well, I researched all I could. So if you still wanna trade just make sure you do all the research you can and you'll be good. Reading this whole forum helped me a lot. Sorry for the length without paragraphing haha.

oh man...if i had a pair of female BP's, honestly theres no way i'd pass up on that offer...if you're really getting about 4 pairs of leaftails, each is valued at roughly $100 a piece, i dont know how much you spent on em, but if they're just normal females i cant imagine you spent more on them than what youll get out of the deal. it almost makes me want to go to the local pet shops, find out who can sell me an adult female ball python, just so i can steal that deal from you!

thenagain, i dont have the space for it, but if i did, i would!
