Tips on Locating Scarlet Kings?

ArctikPro Jun 17, 2005 10:18 PM

Hi, There. I have recently been herping around Orlando in Central Florida in search of the Scarlet Kingsnake but I havent had much luck. Ive been Serching through pinewood habitats, lifting up decaying logs and fallen tree bark from the floor (not bark ripping) But I have yet to come a cross a scarlet king. Ive also tried road crusing in pinewood areas, but it hasent been very productive. If anyone could offer any advice as to how they have had experience and luck in locating this species or knows the Central Florida area and could offer any advice as in what areas to search in I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you for your time...

This time of year, Scarlet Kings are very hard to find in any way other than road hunting. They aren't abundant when road hunting, but if you hunt pine forests, you will eventually find one.

right after it rains is best for road hunting but the best why to find oe is look under every thing and try looking at night in pine forest a good clue that there is SK snake is there will be lots and lots of skinks(find the food and you will find the snakes)i am glad to hear that you don't take the bark off of the trees give it time and you will find one . if you planed on having at as a pet their are not that easy to get eating and will most likely die so don't take more than a photo or two there out there just keep looking
good luck happy herping

I have found SK's year round in Fla. But you have to know where to look. There are some areas that still produce 10 to 20 in a single day of looking. And I'm talking about large adults...18" to 25". I have found 5 over the years that measured 27"- 28". Most SK's this large will fed readily on pinks. Road cruising is the least productive method. Unfortunately, due to the number of "super colletor's" that read this forum, I am reluctant to tell everyone where and how. If you are only looking to photo them or are just going to take one or two for private use, email me directly and I will help you find what you are looking for. Orlando in general is not prime SK area, but you're only about 2 hours drive from some of the best SK hunting to be found anywhere.
Cheers,
Bob
