northern pine eggs

daveb Jun 18, 2005 08:15 AM

I have been out of the snake room for 2 days, to give all of us a little rest. Checked in this morning to find eggs with two northern pine females. I was "kind of expecting" the eggs as both had nest boxes but I was still pleasantly surprised. The females did not seem to expand as much as I have seen in other pituophis, so I had my doubts whether breeding was successful. These are my first northern pine snakes ( referring to the breeders- I acquired them as hatchlings) and thus my first northern pine eggs. It never fails for me, no matter what is breeding for the first time, it is always an exciting yet humbling event. Now as odd as it may sound, here comes my favorite part of herpetoculture- incubating the eggs!
Hopefully I will have pics of the eggs soon.

It is the same snake in both pictures. I happened to pick that one up in a reptile store in Rochester NY several years ago when I wanted to start working with northern pines. There was no clue at the time (as a hatchling) the snake would be such a nice black and white as an adult.
Thanks,
Dave

Congratulations!

I'm hoping to produce Northern pines for the first time in 2005 as well (no eggs yet, but I think she's gravid). I gotta agree with you, producing something for the first time is the most exciting part of this hobby.

That is a great looking pine there, would be cool if some babies looked like her too.
