What is going on here?

starsevol Jun 18, 2005 08:26 AM

About the middle of February, I bred Katie and Sangria and observed the mating. 17 days ago Katie laid her eggs and 2 days ago had her post lay shed. Sangria has not laid her eggs yet and now she is blue. I know I saw her mate! She is chunky and LOOKS gravid. Any idea what is going on here?

Also I notice that many of you have babies already. Do you breed in December or January to get babies this early?

Unfortunately, just because they mate successfully doesn't guarantee that the female will produce eggs. She may just be ovulating. This can be pretty much the same if if she were gravid - weight gain, feeling "lumpy", going off food, being restless and shedding. They then just go back to normal after a while and never lay.

Either that, or she's just going to make you sweat for that clutch. I'm in the UK and only had my first clutch last week. Still waiting for another that's definitely gravid to settle in a laying box.

Apart from them, I've already had one fool me with the mating/ovulation/nothing trick.

My advice is to treat yours as though she was gravid and keep offering her food at regular intervals. Only time will tell I'm afraid... Happy nail-biting!

She ate last night but there is a definate swelling behind her cloaca and her spine has that "hollow look" that gravid girls get. But she is also definately blue and inactive and looks like she will shed in a few days. I am treating her as gravid and I am hoping she lays. If she doesnt lay does that mean shes infertile? She is one of the prettiest snakes I have ever seen, am amel bloodred het for motley and she was bred with a bloodred. I hatched her out of 2 normals that I was boarding for a friend (he said for payment I could keep any babies produced) and I waited 3 years to breed her. If she doesnt lay this year is it possible she will lay next year?
