Pastels & Selective Breeding

CJBianco Jun 18, 2005 10:32 AM

Anyone have a list of the different lines of Pastels along with the dates (years) each line was proven genetic?

After months of research, I have come to believe the ever-so quoted statement that: a Pastel is a Pastel is a Pastel.

However, I still wonder if certain lines may be generally nicer because of a longer history of selective breeding. For instance, of all the Super Pastels I've seen, the Graziani Super Pastel still looks the nicest. (I would still love to see the Ruppell Super Pastel.) Could this be because the Graziani has a longer history of selective breeding than most lines?

I understand that it is easily possible that the owners of the nicest Bell & Lemon line Super Pastels simply do not post photos. This could be the reason the that Graziani Super Pastel stands out. Who knows? (I'd still like some dates, though.)

Any ideas? Any dates?

Thanks In Advance,
Chris

I don't think that Selective breeding has really come into play yet with any of the pastel lines. We're still pretty much at the point where if it's a pastel, it will be bred. Even the ugliest pastel around is going to be bred by someone. Perhaps the super pastels that you find the most attractive happen to be Grazinai line because it's one of the oldest lines and there are simply more of them out there to choose from.
