Questions about taking Ig outside.......

Iguanamom Jun 18, 2005 12:16 PM

Hi everyone. Since summer is here and we have been having some warm sunny days, i would love to take ozzy out for some nautral sunlight. Im not sure how to go about doing this. Im terrified he will get away from me. We had a incedent at the end of last summer where he escaped out a window, was a small tear in the screen i wasnt aware of. But ended up a huge tree, all the way to the top of course. Finally after calling everyone i could think of, finally got a tree service out to help me get him down. I have a leash i bought when i first got him, but its the type that goes in the front, and i hear these can damage his spikes so i dont want to use that. I was wondering if someone had a picture of the ones that go on the rear? Im thinking someone here posted a pict of one they had made. Ozzy is pretty tame, but given the chance, being outside im sure he would run for the first tree he could find. And when your holding him and he decides he wants down, hes gonna get down, not much i can do to stop him. Since hes like approx 3.5 feet long now. So what do you guys think? should i wait till hes more tame to attempt this? Or any other tips you guys have would be appreciated. thanks Tami

I have an old rectangle rought iron bird cage that I have turned on it's side so it's about 4 feet long but only 2 ft tall. It's ok for ig boy to bask for about 20 to 30 minutes or so in the sun. Any longer and he gets restless and wants out NOW!! But it's helpful. I believe I read somewhere that just 15minutes of actual unfiltered sunlight was equivalent to 1 week of a UVB bulb in an enclosure!!! Can't remember where I read that but perhaps my buddy Melissa K. can give her 2 cents on this one. I'd really like to know if that is accurate. But perhaps you could build a rough outside enclosure. Sometimes I'll just hold my boy in my arms. It took him a while to get use to all the "weird" things in the back yard, but now he usually will let me walk around with him. But I'll never trust him to just walk around on his own....he's just too sneaky!
