Which pastel to buy

sunset714 Jun 18, 2005 06:27 PM

I was wondering which is better to start off with. I male pastel with a 100% het female or the other way around getting a female with a 100% het male.

Thanks

Technically Pastels do not have hets. for the Pastel gene.
When you breed a Pastel to a normal statistically half of the offspring should be pastel. Males are the cheaper of the sex, whereas females are more expensive. I feel that the reson for the price increase is due to the fact that breeding Pastel to Pastel will produce the Super Pastel.
Your best bet would be to purchase a Pastel Male and a 1200 gram female as soon as you are able to, that way depending on growth rate of the Pastel and weight gain of the female you could possibly produce Pastels by this time next year. I have heard of many people with Pastel males that have bred as early as 6 months. Good luck.

Thanks for the info, so i might as well save up and get a pair of pastels then since there isnt really a het for them. What does a super pastel look like. Is the black less on the bp. Or is the color more intense.

Thanks again

The color is more intense, and so is the blushing(lightened black areas).

Not only that.
All the offspring from a super pastel(bred by a normal female)will be pastels!(aka visable hets)

Thanks for the info, then what is a pastel jungle is that the same as a pastel but a different variation of it or just more of a intense color? I see post on here stating if you breed a jungle pastel to a normal pastel you can get the super pastel?

Pastel jungle and pastel are the same thing.
Some people just say pastel is all,and vise versa.

Each egg from a pastel X pastel breeding has a 25% chance of being a super.

Same goes for recessive morphs (like an albino).
Each egg from a het albino X het albino breeding has a 25% chance of being an albino.

For all intents and purposes:
The only difference between the two types (co-dominant and recessive) is that the pastel is a visable het.

Actually all pastels are hets (heterozygous for the pastel gene). The heterozygous form results in a visible change in morphology. The homozygous form results in the "super" form.

How do you get to the homozygous form. So all pastels are hetero but I dont get how you can get to the homoz form when you breed pastel to pastel.

To get the Homozygous form, you would breed Pastel to Pastel. For example if you bred Pastel to Pastel and the female laid four eggs, and all four eggs hatched statistically one of the offspring would be the Homozygous form or as it's better known a Super Pastel. The rest would be Pastels.
There are a number of lines that produce beautiful animals: Graziani, Bell, NERD Lemon, VPI, and Matrix Blonde.
Check out what is called the "Super Duper Pastel" on Mark Mandic's web site www.ballpython.ca , it's still a Super Pastel (Pastel x Pastel) but it is AMAZING!!! If a super is what your after immeadiately then a pair would obviously be the best choice. Again though, if your just starting out breeding and you don't mind waiting a while, a Pastel male and a normal adult breeding size female is a good choice too. I guess im partial to that idea because that's how im starting
In any case research your breeders and look around for "specials". Also try the reptile shows that may be in your area. Good luck and have fun!

Breeding Pastel to Pastel and getting the theoretical 4 egg clutch, it would NOT give you a Super and the rest Pastels. One of the eggs should contain a Super, two of the eggs should produce Pastels, and the last egg should contain a NORMAL Ball Python. When I say "should" I am using that word lightly. The Ball Python gods love to play with the odds!

You probably have seen this already, but if not...

i would defiantly buy Albinos if your looking for an entry level morph that can make you money. Not Pastels the market is flooded with them. Unless you just like Pastels better than Albinos.

Thanks for the help guys, yea i really like the outcome of the pastels to super pastels. The albinos are cool but not to my liking. Not really in it for the money just for fun.
