Hey,

Nice scarlet. I must also have an apricot scarlet in my collection. It is about 25", and a real beauty. I have given it several chicken eggs, which it cracked open, and devoured the contents. It completely cleaned out the egg shells. Pretty amazing. Interesting little guys.
Also...
Has anyone here ever heard of a scarlet hissing? I hadn't at all, until mine started flattening out, hissing and blowing like a hognose. Pretty interesting snakes. I can only imagine the thrill of uncovering such a serpent beneath the mouldy pulp of a rotten log, in the humid forests of the Southeastern United States.
Thanks for sharing the neat picture.

They are great looking. Is yours a steady eater ? I read that can be a problem. I have considered them but have a feeling the feeding part could be a problem as read not many steady eaters.
If you mix more protein in the egg will yours eat it?
Thanks

Yep, scarlets are often thought of as difficult feeders, but the more and more people that I talk to, the more and more I am finding people that have had success maintaining them. If you look back to the September posts on this forum, one user states that he was able to get his to "eat some strips of raw chicken soaked in raw beaten egg."
Some people have had success feeding scarlets small lizards such as skinks and anoles, but mine is doing fine right now on a diet of just beaten chicken eggs. I whip up the egg, and put it back in the shell, then place the shell in the snakes feeding dish. It then usually comes and crushes the shel all around with its head, then laps up the contents.
Another time, it crushed the egg with a loop of its body, and then drank it all up. It ate two eggs since I got it. It usually doesn't leave a drop behind.
