I was out doing my night herping and stumbled on a western ribbon snake (Thamnophis proximus proximus)and when I tailed it and started taking pictures I noticed there was blood coming out of it's left eye. I've never heard of this being a defensive tactic for ribbon snakes..or is it? Or was it just injured somehow, anybody got an idea? It didn't appear to be injured or crushed on the head, and it's other eye was not doing this. But I just took one or two pics and let it go because I didn't want to stress it if it was injured by taking more.
