Hi Dan,
I think you have a V. salvator marmoratus there - not a V.s. nuchalis - although it does resemble the Panay white-headed V.s. nuchalis I think it is V.s. marmoratus....those are easier to find than a V.s. nuchalis is by far...go to www.cybersalvator.com and ask those folks there - they are V. salvator enthusiasts...

I appreciate the interest, however I am quite certain it's a nuchalis.

She is nervous but will eat from forceps, however gives me a slap in the face or arm with her tail once in a while just to remind me of what she is.

Sure looks like my male anyway

Oxyrhopus Jun 21, 2005 10:10 AM

FEMALE.

jobi Jun 21, 2005 01:27 PM

Sure! Heard that one 100 times hahaha
But when I ask how do you know? I get all kinds of silly answers.
It never everted! The guy who sold it to me said so! It was probed as female! Its to small to be a male! It behaves like a female! And many more I can’t remember. However on a few occasion someone came along with a good reason to say it’s a female. But you aren’t one of them APARENTLY.

You know what? I don’t give a flying crap if it’s either, others who’d have asked why I think its male, then id have provided photos to show why. But the important is that you know. Therefore no need to spend time and money obtaining wrong mate.

Yea well I still do not know what gave anyone any idea that I was seeking a determination of its species or sex?

Dan your first post said "This gal needs a man in her life now. Anyone with a male?"
Then you ask, "what gave anyone any idea that I was seeking a determination of its species or sex?"
I find it hard to find a mate for my critters if I am not sure of the sex.
Jobi was trying to help.
Now to Jobi, I would love to see what you have for comparison.
I don't keep these beast but would like to know the difference for my own knowlege.
I have my savs and albigs figured out in the sex department, and hope to figure out the argus once it gets a little bigger.
Knowing more about other species is just better knowlege.

Well I am confused if you are confused? "This gal" meant I have a female. So if I have a female, then I need a mate, a male?

Dan

kap10cavy Jun 21, 2005 10:30 PM

I know very little about water and mangrove monitors but am trying to learn. I know if I had one and posted a pic and Johnny and Jobi and/or Jody told me what they thought the sex was, I would be inclined to believe them.

Well maybe someone made a mistake. And if I had to decide from what I saw with my own eyes vice any persons opinion over a photo, I guess I would have to lean a bit to what I saw with my eyes. That's not to say that the sexing was accurate as I am suspicious myself now? And I don't know those fellows you mentioned.

Dan

jobi Jun 21, 2005 09:10 PM

Your right you didn’t ask my opinion, sorry!

However if I was to post and say this male needs a female, I sure wish someone would be kind enough to say Steeve it looks like a female to me, then if the guy has real experience with the specie id think twice about my first diagnostic.
In any case I wish you luck in finding a mate.

jobi Jun 21, 2005 09:37 PM

Yes I have a male, its almost 20 year old 44in TL and still kicking

Oxyrhopus Jun 21, 2005 10:26 PM

Oh now I see where your coming from. Yea, based on that photo, now I am wondering what the heck I have here. My monitor is larger than that I believe but I have it in a really big cage, so I need to pull it out again and sex it again to be sure. I have not checked the sex in a while but it was probed in my presence with a male and another female. And I know this does not mean much, but my male cummingi tried to mount her but she was too small. I noticed also that my nuchalis's head is entirely white whereas your is not?

Dan

Those white headed Nuchalis come from only one place anyone knows about = in the foothills of Panay Island, Philippines. Dr. Maren Gaulke has written a very nice article about them. A group of White-head Panay V.s.n. came into the USA a few years ago, and were confiscated by the USFWS and deposited into a zoo in Arizona or New Mexico. I have that info in the files somewhere - but have no knowledge of others coming into the USA before or since those animals did. Do you live in USA? Philippines? If you live in PHilippines, how did you get them? Collect them yourself?

All Varanus species from Philippines are protected by their local laws there...but export via Thailand, Vietnam to Jakarta to Mexico City, etc does occur.

I posted above that I thought your monitor was V.s. marmoratus as these Panay types are very rare in captivity. I Also did not recognize the pattern, until I spoke with J. Adragna about it (=www.cybersalvator.com).

Captive born from a zoo I think. But email me if you want.

Dan

Johnantny Jun 22, 2005 10:33 AM

both subspecies from philippines are very closely related. marmoratus tends to be a larger animal, and nuchalis has the larger scales. there are places in luzon which the marmoratus look very close match to panay nuchalis. jobi's male is marmoratus, your animal is nuchalis. if you want further picture proof of both types, or info on nuchalis, go to cybersalvator.com forum and ask to see. best regards,

Good Luck
