Gulf Coast, Ornate, Hybrid?

PHRatz Jun 19, 2005 10:26 AM

This is a turtle who was found with nail polish on her carapace. She was found in West TX where the only box turtles that occur naturally are T.O.ornata & T.O.luteola. There is a problem with residents keeping lots of turtles in their backyards & they often do pick up any turtle they see no matter where they are traveling in TX or NM, then they keep them all together in their backyards & feed them cat food. Yeah I know it's annoying.
Could this be an extremely large ornate or could she be a hybrid of an ornate & Gulf coast box? She weighs a pound & a half, she's huge.
In one photo she is next to the box who used to be our largest. What do you think?

Thanks Jim.. that's the opinion most people have, she's pure ornate. She's something else, huge yet skittish & shy but we enjoy her being with us.
